1. Eligibility & Basic Requirements
What is the minimum age to apply for MM2H?
The main applicant must be at least 25 years old. For the Special Zone (SEZ) category, the minimum age is 21.
Is there any nationality restriction?
There is no nationality restriction as long as the applicant’s country has diplomatic relations with Malaysia.
2. Visa Validity, Renewal & Residency Requirements
How long is the MM2H visa valid?
Depending on the category, the visa is valid for 5 years, 15 years, or 20 years. All types are renewable.
Is there a minimum stay requirement each year?
Generally, a 90-day stay per year is required. Applicants aged 50 and above may be eligible for exemptions.
3. Financial Requirements & Fixed Deposit
How much fixed deposit is required?
Requirements vary by category, from USD 150,000 to USD 1,000,000.
Does only the main applicant need to place the fixed deposit?
Yes, only the main applicant needs to make the fixed deposit. Family members do not need additional deposits.
Can the fixed deposit be withdrawn?
After approval, up to 50% may be withdrawn for medical, education, or property purchase purposes.
4. Property Requirements
Is purchasing property mandatory?
Yes, property ownership is one of the application requirements.
What is the minimum property price?
It varies by state:
Kuala Lumpur: RM1,000,000
Johor: RM600,000
Selangor: RM2,000,000
Can existing property be used for the application?
Yes, provided it meets the state’s minimum property price threshold.
5. Dependents & Family Members
Which dependents can be included?
Eligible dependents include: spouse, children under 21, unmarried & unemployed children aged 21–34, and parents or parents-in-law above 60.
Can children study in Malaysia?
Yes. For university studies (18+), a student visa is required.
6. Employment, Business & Investment
Can MM2H holders work in Malaysia?
Not automatically. A separate Employment Pass is required.
Can MM2H holders start a business or invest in Malaysia?
Platinum Visa holders may operate businesses as shareholders or investors.
7. Medical & Insurance
Is medical insurance required?
Applicants below 60 must have medical insurance that covers Malaysia.
What medical facilities can MM2H holders access?
MM2H holders may access Malaysia’s high-quality and reasonably priced healthcare services.
8. Taxation & Foreign Income
Is foreign income remitted to Malaysia taxable?
Foreign income is generally exempt from tax.
Is MM2H suitable for asset planning and tax management?
Yes. Malaysia’s low tax rates and stable financial environment make it attractive for international wealth planning.
9. Other Common Questions
Do I need to move to Malaysia immediately after approval?
No, but the yearly residency requirement must be met.
Can I apply if my passport is close to expiry?
A minimum of two years’ passport validity is recommended.
Is MM2H the same as Permanent Residency (PR)?
No. MM2H is not equivalent to PR and does not guarantee future citizenship.
Can the property be sold later?
The property cannot be sold within 10 years, but upgrading to a higher-value property is allowed.
What happens to family members’ visas if the main applicant passes away?
They may continue under the “Successor Main Applicant” mechanism, subject to policy requirements.
Is the MM2H fixed deposit safe?
Deposits placed in licensed Malaysian banks are generally secure and refundable when conditions are met.
